Making Money

As an Avon seller your main goal is to make money. There are two basic ways to do this.

  • Build a customer base and keep those customers happy.
  • Regularly seek out new customers so that you can go on making more money.

Although I am writing in the UK the information provided is relevant to Avon sellers in any country, from USA to India, because the Avon business model is practically identical wherever you are.

Tips to keep existing customers coming back for more.

  • The Number One Golden Rule is that you are reliable. It is most important that you call back for brochures and deliver orders when you say you will. People will not appreciate it if you knock on their door for a brochure on a Friday night when you said you would be back on Wednesday afternoon.
  • Call back at the same time every visit. For example I always do my deliveries and collections on a Thursday evening between 7pm and 8pm. This is when i know my customers are likely to be home, and my customers know to have their orders ready for that time. It is also reassuring for elderly customers who will know that when there is a knock on the door at that particular time they can expect it to be me.
  • Keep a record of your customers address and contact details so that you can get in touch about orders or deliveries if necessary.
  • You might like to send your customers a friendly email or text to remind them when you will be calling.
  • Always put your contact details on the order form, so that customers can text or email you an order if they wont be at home when you call.
  • Make a note of regular customers preferences of a fragrance, foundation shade or toiletry and show them when these are on special offer. They will appreciate that you remembered.
  • Give your regular customers a Christmas card, or pop a little chocolate treat in with their order at Halloween. Personal touches help to maintain a good relationship with the customer.
  • Be prepared to 'go the extra mile' for a customer. Seek out a product that they really want, maybe from a previous campaign. Point out special deals if they have missed it on their order, such as a 'buy one get one free offer'. Immediately offer to refund or replace a product they are not happy with.
  • When you are delivering orders NEVER leave an order with a customer without payment.
  • When you are making deliveries make sure you have a bag of change with you in case a customer doesn't have the exact payment.
  • Use a pencil if you are noting anything in your calling book. From experience I know that pens are no good in wet weather!
  • Put your books into resealable, clear plastic bags so that your customers can leave them out for you to collect in any weather.
  • Pop samples in with their orders. Spray brochures with a new fragrance.
  • Make sure you have some product knowledge. Read the Avon magazine that is sent free to reps and keep up to date with new products and shades.
  • Use Avon products. Wear the jewellery and demonstrate the make up. A customer will have more faith in a product if you use it yourself.
  • Always look smart and well groomed. Remember you are selling beauty products so your customers will expect you to look as though you use them yourself!

Tips to find new customers

  • Your Avon brochure is your store front. As many people as possible need to see it and the only way for this to happen is for you to get your books out there. A brochure is earning you no money when it is in your home, and because you buy your Avon books they need maximum exposure to make the most profit.
  • Give all your existing customers an extra book and order forms to show their friends, and offer them a free gift for every new customer they find you. The free gift can be something simple like a large bottle of bubble bath or a body lotion.
  • If you have a facebook or my space or other social network make sure you advertise on there that you are an 'Avon Lady'. Also add your Avon Lady status to your email signature.
  • Ask friends and family to take brochures and order forms into their workplaces. This can bring you multiple orders from people you may never even meet. Keep a record of their contact details though, make sure these customers can contact you if they need to, and always stress that payment is essential on delivery. No money - no goods!
  • Take brochures with you to the hairdressers or beauty salon if they are friendly and you use it regularly. Leave brochures for the staff, and they might also let other regular customers look at them too. Again, leave your own details and collect their contact details.
  • When you collect your children from school have some brochures handy to give out to the other parents. Ask in school if you can leave a brochure in the staff room.
  • Leave brochures at any local group you are part of or have contact with, such as playgroups, pre school groups, church groups, art classes and so on.
  • Get a supply of business cards printed up, with your name and email address. These are useful to leave with local businesses or groups along with the brochure, and help to demonstrate to people that you take your Avon business seriously.
  • Have a stall at school fetes or village fairs. In the months before an event you can build up a small stock of items like hand cream, deodorant, shower gel and shampoo as they can be sold on easily. You can also have brochures ready to hand out from your stall as well as your business card.

Get The Most From Your Brochures

As I mentioned, your Avon brochure is your key to making more money and as many potential customers as possible need to see it. Here are some ways to help persuade them to place an order.

  • Offer a free gift to customers who spend a certain amount. For example, "Spend £5.00 and receive a free Senses shower gel".
  • Fold the corners over on pages where there is an especially good deal, so that customers are made aware of it.
  • Spray a fragrance on the relevant page, or tape a sample sachet to the appropriate page to allow customers to try the product.
  • Print labels to put on the order form to highlight the date of collection and the date of delivery of their order. It looks more professional than a handwritten note.

Ultimately if you want your Avon business to be successful and make you money you need to take it seriously. Keep good records, be reliable and handle your money carefully. Pay attention to your customers and always be ready to promote your Avon business.

Hi Madurai. Avon is a direct selling business which sells cosmetics, toiletries and accessories through a catalogue which is distributed to customers. Maybe you would like to check my other hubs on this subject :)
